Lionel Messi has confirmed that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 next month will be the last of his career,The 35-year-old will be playing in his fifth and final World Cup this year, hoping to lead Argentina to its first championship since 1986. Speaking to ”Star plus” in Argentina
The Legend replied “Yes. Surely, yes” when asked if the upcoming tournament would be his last.
“I don’t know whether we are big favourites, but I believe Argentina is a candidate because of its history, which means even more now because of the way we got here,” Messi said. “But in a World Cup anything can happen, all the matches are very difficult. It isn’t always the favourites who win it.”
Argentina has won the World Cup twice, in 1978 and 1986. Argentina will open the tournament on Nov.22 against Saudi Arabia in Group C before facing Mexico and Poland.
Lionel helped lead Argentina to the quarterfinals in 2006 and 2010, then to the final in 2014, when Argentina lost to Germany, 1–0, in extra time. Messi earned the Golden Ball as the best player in the tournament, scoring four goals in seven games.
Argentina was eliminated in the round of 16 in 2018, losing to France (4-3). The last international competition Messi won was the Copa America last year when they defeated Brazil in the final.
